These Homes, and What Their Drains Deal With

A gully that drains slowly, or a toilet that needs asking twice before it clears, usually points straight at ageing pipe rather than anything you did wrong.

This suburb grew up around the rail-industrial works at Clyde, and worker housing went in from the 1880s through to the 1930s. Sixth Street still shows the fibro, weatherboard and brick originals from that period, standing alongside later brick-veneer infill.

That first building boom happened well before anyone was thinking about modern drainage standards, and the pipe put in the ground at the time reflects it: earthenware runs, joined every metre or so, never designed to last a century.

Homes from that original building wave, and the ones that followed through the 1940s to 1960s, mostly still connect to the drainage laid down at the time. The newer infill blocks that went in near the shops run on more modern pipe again.

The Clyde rail yards gave the suburb its working-class beginnings, and Lebanese and Maltese heritage is still easy to spot around the local shops today.

It's a suburb of young families more than anything, mostly in freestanding houses, with roughly as many owners as renters. Plenty of those original drain lines have sat untouched since the day they went in the ground.

The Clyde Street shops back onto much of that older housing, and it's a strip we know well from years of jobs in the surrounding streets. Rawson Road carries much the same story a block over.

The suburb sits low, in the catchment that drains toward the Duck River, so streets near Clyde Street and Rawson Road can find stormwater backing up in short order during a proper downpour.

That combination of old pipe and low ground is exactly what our blocked stormwater and blocked drain repair teams deal with most.

None of this means every old house here is a ticking time bomb. It just means old age is usually the culprit behind a blockage, more often than any one-off accident.

What Goes Wrong Under These Homes

The rest of the call-outs boil down to three further causes.

  • Root-blocked drains. Mature street trees find their way into a loosened joint before anyone notices, the single leading cause of blockages here.
  • Failing earthenware pipe. Pre-war and post-war homes here still run original earthenware pipe that fractures at the joints and lets in silt over time.
  • Collapsed clay lines. The reactive shale clay under these streets keeps old clay drainage on the move, and a decades-old line can shift and, in the worst cases, actually collapse, sometimes needing excavation or a full reline.

A collapsed section usually shows up first as a drain that keeps returning to the same slow state within days of being cleared, which is often the clue that clearing alone won't fix it.

A five-minute camera check usually settles which of the three is actually behind a particular blockage, rather than digging on a guess.

Our Blocked Drain Services Here

Six services sit behind the one phone number, and the plumber on site works out which applies:

Service What it's for
Blocked drain repair Root damage and collapsed or cracked clay pipe
CCTV drain inspection Confirming the fault before committing to a fix
Blocked stormwater Surcharging pits and overflowing gullies
Drain cleaning General build-up and slow-running lines
Blocked sewer Sewage already backing up into the house
Blocked toilets A stubborn bowl that just won't budge

One phone call covers all six, and the fault gets matched to the fix on the day.

Why These Homes Choose Us

South Granville practically borders our Granville patch, which is a different thing to just being nearby on a map.

Cumberland City Council territory or not, the distance from Granville barely registers on the drive over. What matters more is knowing the worker-era cottages here as well as we know our own patch, right down to which streets still run the original pipe.

The lifetime labour warranty applies whether the job's big or small, and a garden tap gets thrown in free once the paid work's done.

Blocked Drain Right Now?

Watch for these signs before a slow drain turns into a genuine emergency.

  • An outside gully that pools with water even when it hasn't rained
  • The washing machine emptying into a drain that gurgles back in response
  • A sewage smell drifting up from a floor waste that's usually odourless
  • A toilet needing repeated flushes before it finally clears properly
  • A damp patch spreading across the lawn with no obvious cause

Streets near the river can go from a slow drain to standing water within the hour once a proper storm arrives. The phone gets answered day or night, and getting someone out rarely takes long.

A working drain doesn't fail overnight. It sends warnings first, and these are them.

How We Clear Drains, From Call to Warranty

  1. Call (02) 9199 2575 and describe what's happening.
  2. A plumber arrives and assesses the blockage, camera in hand if it's not obvious.
  3. You're told the cost, and nothing proceeds until you say go ahead.
  4. Whatever the footage calls for happens next: a straightforward clear, a patch, or a full reline.
  5. The site is left clean, and the fix is checked before anyone leaves, not left for you to inspect alone.
  6. The labour is then covered by our lifetime warranty, which comes with the job automatically, nothing further to sign or pay for.

South Granville and the Surrounding Streets We Cover

These streets sit alongside four other suburbs we cover on the same run from Granville:

  • Harris Park: the Little India strip, part of the same territory
  • Merrylands: Stockland and the station, still on the list
  • Westmead: the hospital precinct, covered just the same

Wherever the job lands among them, the price and the crew stay the same.

Common questions

Local Blocked Drain FAQs

The questions that come up most before anyone books.

Is a quote free, or do you charge to come and look?

Quotes are free. You only ever pay for work you've agreed to first, never for the visit itself.

Do you deal with tree-root blockages in South Granville drains?

We do, and often. With so much original earthenware still buried under these streets, roots finding their way in isn't the exception.

Will I be charged just for the visit?

Not a cent. Having someone come out and diagnose it costs you nothing.

Is same-day drain clearing available in South Granville?

Generally yes. Booking a plumber for later in the same day is the normal outcome, not a special favour.

Can you explain how the quote actually works?

Once the plumber's assessed the job, you get one number for the work, and that's what you pay.

What is it about older South Granville homes that leads to blocked drains?

Many homes here still run the original earthenware pipe laid decades ago, and old joints eventually crack or fill with roots.
